Training Your Cat To Behave

People often equate cats and dogs to children. They think that with a firm hand you can train them to do whatever it is you want them to do and how to behave. Let me tell you that they are not the same thing by any means. With kids you can teach them how to walk and talk and how to do what is right. With the right type of punishments and the proper training all is good, at least for a little while.

Trying to deal with the cat behavior problems is a whole other thing. I have had a cat and let me tell you that they are much harder to deal with at times. The best time to start this training is when they are still kittens and easy to be trained. This is the time when their little minds are soaking everything up. It is the time for them to learn what you want them to do and how to behave.

Set a Standard

While they are still young you need to make sure that you set the standards and the guidelines. If you see them climbing on the table tell them no and take them off. If you see them trying to eat your food, tell them no. If you see them play biting tell them no. Do not laugh because they are so tiny it doesn’t even hurt. They see this reaction and they will keep doing it. Before long those teeth will begin to get sharp and it will hurt.

The Water Bottle

The best disciplining tool that you can use is the water bottle. Cats are notoriously afraid of water and this is something that will always get to them. Keep a spray bottle full of water in a specific area of the home. When they do something they should not be doing spray them lightly. Do not overdo it. After the first few times of this they are going to get the hint. Before long all you will have to do is reach for the bottle and they will stop immediately.

No Hitting

Speaking with a firm voice is also going to help. The tone of your voice is a big indication for them to know when they have upset you or done something wrong. The one thing that you should never do is hit them. Do not hit their noses or their backsides. This is not fun for them and could cause them to become protective of themselves.

Cats can be a little harder to train. I have been fortunate as my male cat (who passed away a couple months ago) was a very well behaved cat in his 17 years of life. My female cat can be a bit of a trouble maker but not as bad as some people claim with their cats. My male had attitude and he had his fun but did not often do things to get in trouble. He never ate people food-you could leave it on the counter with him in the kitchen and neither of my cats would go for it. He would occasionally jump on the table (but not usually when you were looking) where my female will jump on the table to get your attention. This is never when food was on it tho for either kitty. Neither of them have had a problem finding the cat pan and they never jump on any counters. I actually rarely had to yell at them for anything. My kids however-well that is another story :)
