Treatment Options For Hernias
52
A hernia is a protrusion that is caused when the intestines, or other contents, inside of your body are shifting from one area to another through a weak or damaged wall built entirely of muscle or tissue. It is hard for doctors to know exactly what has caused the hernia to form. In some cases it might be from past surgeries or it could simply be that there was too much pressure and straining that tore the muscles and tissues.
No matter what the reason is, we can all agree that we want to have it repaired and treated as soon as possible. The odd thing about this medical condition is that, in most cases, it causes little to no symptoms. In fact people will live with it for years with only a slight discomfort because they have never felt anything too horrible from it.
By the time they do find it, the thing has become large enough to see through the skin. That is when we panic and rush to the hospital for tests only to be told that we have a hernia. At that time the doctor will present you with two ideas for treatment and hernia recovery. These are two very different treatments, but both can help in their own ways.
Belt
The first option that people will consider is to use the hernia belts. This is not exactly how it sounds. You will not have to wear a leather belt around your waist that will cinch up the contents and keep them firmly inside. Instead it is a cloth band that will wrap under your legs and around your stomach and waist. It is much more comfortable when you wear it like this and it will help to keep everything where it belongs.
Surgery
Of course the belt is just a quick fix, but not a permanent one. For that you are going to have to look into surgery. There are obviously a couples different types of surgery to choose from depending on what your doctor feels most comfortable with. Speak with your doctor about the side effects, what can go wrong, and how it can help.
