My mother had this for a number of years, can't imagine how much pain she must have endured but she never showed it and worked despite the pain. The doctor said there was no need of surgery but my parents went ahead and she died of complications. Some say do it and some others say don't do it. I hope the technologies have improved now.

I have had two hernia surgeries.  The first one was when I lifted something up that I shouldn't have and was in some pain.  It was in my stomach area.  The surgery fixed it but the surgeon told me that the end of where he had to fix might tear again.  Yep one year to the day I lifted a cinderblock and I felt it rip and knew then that I should call the Dr.  This one was wors--it was the size of a softball and my belly button was removed because the hernia was attached to it.  That was two and a half years ago,

Oh and baby girls can get Inguinal hernia's. Both of my daughter's had it at a very early age. Both of them I had to take for second oppinions and both times I had caught it almost too late as they both had to have emergency surgery within 6 hours of finding it from the second Dr. They were both unter 9 months old at the time.

Apparently hernias are very common. I've been lucky, but a friend of mine wasn't so fortunate. Which is why I started doing research about hernia prevention, so that I can do whatever possible to keep from that happening myself.

cgull8m, yea they're very painful and in most cases won't ever go away without surgery. I've heard of people living decades with them because they're afraid or surgery or don't have the money.

Lady Guinevere, I've got a baby girl on the way - just three months away and I'm scared about taht myself. Thanks for your comments.

This is good information. I have a noticeable umbilical hernia. My mother had one in the same area too. Must be hereditary. I am in no pain, so it makes sense to leave it alone for the time being. Any time I have shown it to a doctor, they just tell me I have a hernia (duh!) and don't say anything should be done about it.

Useful information! Thank you!! Never had one, but I gave someone one, once. Felt pretty bad about it. Not going into the details on that one!

I wonder how those living in the developing world can tolerate this kind of pain. I doubt they have enough medical knowledge or money to seek treatment.

I have had my hernia for years now, but also concidering surgery again. Mine started 20 years ago, just popped out of my tummy like a little gulf ball. Scared the life out of me at the time. I had sugery yet told it may or may not hold. It didnt and have had the odd visit to hospital where it has been puched back in again , that in its self was just as painful as it popping out. Its not about not having no knowledge or avalability to medical treatment for me personally , its about the attitude of the medical profession over the issues of A HERNIA . Most like to say leave them , which is what I have done , yet as time is going by mine is sticking out more and more were i will push harder to have mine repaired. They are unplesant , uncomfortable and surly not normal.
